Tariq Lamptey has completed his permanent transfer to Fiorentina from Brighton & Hove Albion for approximately £6 million. The Ghana international signed a four-year contract with the Serie A club after spending five years on the south coast.

Tariq Lamptey Ends Five-Year Brighton Stay

Tariq Lamptey officially joined Fiorentina on Monday 1st September 2025 after passing his medical in Florence. The 24-year-old defender signed a four-year contract with the Italian club worth €6 million plus performance-based add-ons.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised the departing full-back as “an exceptional professional and individual”. The German coach acknowledged that this move presents Tariq Lamptey with opportunities to play Serie A and European football.

The transfer ends speculation about his Brighton future after his contract entered its final year. He made 122 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring five goals and providing 16 assists since joining from Chelsea.

Fiorentina posted photos of the defender in club training gear alongside the caption “Medical tests for Tariq Lamptey”. The Italian club confirmed his arrival through their official channels.

    Injury Problems Define Brighton Career

Tariq Lamptey endured numerous injury setbacks throughout his five-year Brighton spell. He missed 77 matches due to various injuries including ankle, knee, and foot problems.

His latest ankle injury occurred during training before Brighton’s match against Manchester City. He was expected to return from suspension but suffered the setback just before the fixture.

Hurzeler described the injury as “a big issue” without providing specific timescales for recovery. The German manager’s comments suggested Tariq Lamptey faced an extended absence.

Previous injuries included hamstring problems that restricted him to 15 Premier League appearances last season. Tariq Lamptey’s fitness concerns influenced Brighton’s reluctance to offer contract extensions.

Chelsea Academy Origins and Early Promise

Tariq Lamptey joined Chelsea’s academy aged eight after playing grassroots football for Larkspur Rovers. The defender progressed through every youth level at Stamford Bridge.

His Chelsea debut came against Arsenal on 29 December 2019, replacing Fikayo Tomori in a 2-1 victory. He became the seventh academy graduate to feature under Frank Lampard.

The right-back made three first-team appearances before leaving for Brighton in January 2020. He cost the Seagulls approximately £3 million in his initial transfer.

His pace and attacking threat immediately impressed Brighton supporters during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Fans nicknamed him “Lockdown Lamptey” during his early breakthrough performances.

International Switch from England to Ghana

Tariq Lamptey represented England at under-15, under-17, under-18, and under-21 levels. He earned four caps for England under-21s before switching allegiances to Ghana.

The defender made his Ghana debut in March 2022 against Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier. He has accumulated 11 senior caps for the Black Stars since his international switch.

His decision to represent Ghana reflected his desire for regular international football. He faced strong competition for England places behind Reece James and Kyle Walker.

Ghana named him in their squad for September’s World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali. The Black Stars currently lead Group I in their qualification campaign.

    Fiorentina Competition and Tactical Role

Tariq Lamptey faces competition from Dodô and Robin Gosens for Fiorentina‘s wing-back positions. However, his versatility to play both flanks provides tactical options for manager Vincenzo Italiano.

The Italian club qualified for the Conference League for the fourth consecutive season. Tariq Lamptey will experience European football regularly with the Viola.

Fiorentina started the season with draws against Cagliari and Torino in Serie A. The club requires attacking threat from wide positions that Tariq Lamptey can provide.

His pace and crossing ability suit Fiorentina’s attacking philosophy under Italiano. The manager values full-backs who contribute significantly to offensive phases.

    Brighton Highlight Reel Showcases Quality

Tariq Lamptey scored memorable goals against Manchester United, Leicester City, and Tottenham during his Brighton career. His highlight reel demonstrates his attacking instincts and finishing ability.

The defender’s best moments include assists for Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross against top-six opposition. Tariq Lamptey created numerous chances whilst marauding down Brighton’s flanks.

His performances against Chelsea, his former club, proved particularly impressive. Tariq Lamptey helped Brighton secure famous victories at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.

The full-back’s pace caused problems for elite defenders including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Chilwell. His direct running style troubled Premier League’s finest full-backs.

Serie A Adventure Offers Fresh Start

Tariq Lamptey expressed excitement about experiencing Italian football following his Fiorentina medical. The defender views Serie A as an opportunity to develop his tactical understanding.

His move provides escape from injury-plagued Brighton spell that frustrated both player and club. Tariq Lamptey requires consistent playing time to reach his considerable potential.

Fiorentina’s patient approach to player development suits his situation perfectly. The club specialises in improving young defenders through tactical education.

Tariq Lamptey benefits from reduced Premier League pressure whilst maintaining European competition exposure. Conference League football provides perfect platform for his renaissance.

Brighton Receive Fair Return on Investment

Tariq Lamptey generated £6 million for Brighton after five years of service. The Seagulls doubled their initial £3 million investment despite injury concerns.

His departure creates space for younger defenders including Ferdi Kadioglu and Igor Julio. Brighton’s recruitment strategy focuses on developing talent before profitable sales.

Tariq Lamptey leaves with supporters’ best wishes despite frustrating injury record. His talent was never questioned, only his availability.

The transfer enables Brighton to invest in new projects whilst honouring a loyal servant. Tariq Lamptey deserves credit for his professionalism during difficult periods.
