Marko Lazetic has signed for Aberdeen from AC Milan, aiming to fulfil his potential after an unsettled few years across European football. The 21-year-old Serbian striker agreed to a four-year contract with the Dons, hoping to thrive in the Scottish Premiership after limited opportunities in Italy and a series of loan moves.

From Red Star Debut to Milan Move

Marko Lazetic burst onto the scene with Red Star Belgrade, debuting aged just 16 in the Serbian SuperLiga. His rapid progress attracted AC Milan, who signed him for around £3.5 million in January 2022. The move was seen as a statement of faith in his considerable talent.

Despite his promise, opportunities at Milan were minimal. Lazetic played only twice for the first team, with appearances in Coppa Italia and Serie A limited to a handful of minutes. The intense competition at one of Europe’s top clubs made regular football elusive for the young forward.

    Loan Spells Build Experience

While contracted to Milan, Marko Lazetic embarked on several loan spells to gain crucial first-team exposure. Stints at Serbian side Grafičar Beograd, Austria’s Rheindorf Altach, Dutch club Fortuna Sittard, and most recently TSC in his homeland helped him learn different playing styles.

His most successful spell was at TSC, where Lazetic played 43 matches last season, scoring three times and helping the club secure a seventh-place finish. He also played in the Conference League knockout round, impressing scouts with his physical presence and determination.

The variety of these experiences has helped Marko Lazetic mature, improving his tactical understanding and resilience in adapting to new environments. Managers and analysts see these years as formative for his long-term growth.

Why Aberdeen and the Scottish Premiership?

With one year remaining on his Milan contract, Marko Lazetic opted for a fresh start in Scotland. Aberdeen showed strong intent, securing him for an undisclosed fee and agreeing a significant sell-on clause rather than a traditional transfer fee. Milan retains a percentage of any future sale—reflecting belief in his future value.

The Dons’ new manager, Jimmy Thelin, expressed confidence in Lazetic’s ability to develop further and praised his background, stating “he has competed at a high level in various leagues throughout Europe.”

Marko Lazetic was drawn to Aberdeen’s intensity, energetic atmosphere, and committed fanbase. He explicitly cited the “energy and intensity” at Pittodrie and the support of the football staff in helping make his decision.

    Style of Play and Strengths

Standing over 1.9 metres tall, Marko Lazetic is a powerful centre-forward, likened by scouts to Edin Džeko for his blend of size, skill, and movement.

His strengths include intelligent off-the-ball runs, close control, and sharp finishing. Football Talent Scout notes his ability to link up play and create opportunities for teammates, making him effective in both possession and counter-attacking systems.

Despite his height, experts say he can further improve aerial strength, but his pace and finesse with the ball impress coaches and analysts alike. His pressing from the front aligns well with Aberdeen’s current tactical approach.

    Aberdeen’s Ambition and Squad Building

Aberdeen, recent Scottish Cup holders, have reinforced their squad for another demanding domestic and European campaign. The club hopes Marko Lazetic’s arrival will provide a new dimension to their forward line, increasing competition for places and offering a long-term option for the manager.

Supporters are hopeful that Lazetic can deliver more goals and support established strikers. The Dons’ recruitment strategy has focused on young talent with high upside, and his four-year deal signals a commitment to squad stability.

    Looking Ahead: Potential and Pressure

Marko Lazetic admits he has “watched videos of the fans and admired their passion,” expressing his eagerness to repay their faith and celebrate at Pittodrie. Both club and player acknowledge that he requires time to adapt and reach top fitness due to an uncertain preseason.

Football insiders say Lazetic’s versatility—playing as a lone striker or in a two-man attack—offers tactical flexibility. With the Dons balancing league and European matches, his athleticism and instincts should prove valuable over the season.

    International Experience and Heritage

A regular in Serbia’s youth and under-21 teams, Marko Lazetic benefits from a family steeped in football; his uncle Nikola was a Yugoslav international and his father is also involved in the sport.

These influences bolster his mentality and professionalism, adding to the expectation he can make a real impact in Scotland.

The Verdict: A Talented Striker Ready for a Fresh Start

Marko Lazetic has travelled a complex path for a player of just 21, learning from setbacks and successes across Europe’s leagues.

Aberdeen have invested in potential, and if they can nurture his ability, they may have a star capable of firing the Dons to new heights in Scotland and beyond. The striker’s journey reflects perseverance, international promise, and a hunger to prove himself at Pittodrie.
