Denis Shapovalov has reached the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2022. The Canadian tennis player defeated Valentin Royer in four sets before facing defending champion Jannik Sinner in Saturday’s blockbuster match.

Denis Shapovalov’s Confident Return to Form

Denis Shapovalov declared his confidence “very high” following his second-round victory over Frenchman Valentin Royer. The 26-year-old Canadian secured a hard-fought 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 win to advance to his first US Open third round in three years.

The match lasted three hours and 36 minutes despite being completed in straight sets. Denis Shapovalov fired 29 aces but committed 43 unforced errors in an entertaining contest at Court 7.

Both players struggled to hold serve throughout the match, with Shapovalov eventually securing his sixth break on match point. The Richmond Hill native received strong support from a pro-Canadian crowd in attendance.

Denis Shapovalov expressed satisfaction with his mental resilience compared to earlier in his career. He believes his confidence is now less fragile and more sustained through difficult periods.

Major Challenge Awaits Against Jannik Sinner

Denis Shapovalov faces world number one Jannik Sinner in the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The defending US Open champion represents the biggest test of the Canadian’s resurgent form.

The head-to-head record between the players stands at 1-0 in favour of Shapovalov. Their only previous meeting came in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open, where the Canadian won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Denis Shapovalov acknowledged Sinner’s exceptional quality and lack of obvious weaknesses. The Italian has collected four Grand Slam titles and reached the world number one ranking since their last encounter.

The Canadian stated he’s “definitely looking forward to another matchup” with Sinner. He described these high-profile matches as the type he “lives for” and enjoys playing.

Tactical Approach Against World Number One

Denis Shapovalov plans to dictate play and maintain aggression against Sinner’s solid baseline game. He recognises that the Italian won’t provide many free points during their encounter.

The Canadian believes he must take opportunities when they arise against such a complete player. Denis Shapovalov emphasises the importance of staying aggressive and preventing Sinner from controlling the tempo.

His strategy involves playing his natural game whilst looking for chances to attack. The Richmond Hill product understands he cannot afford to be passive against the defending champion.

Denis Shapovalov demonstrated his attacking mindset during the Royer victory with consistent net approaches. His willingness to take risks paid dividends in the crucial moments.

    Remarkable Recovery from Knee Problems

Denis Shapovalov endured his most challenging period when knee problems forced an early end to his 2023 season. The injury caused significant pain and raised doubts about his ability to return to pain-free tennis.

He underwent stem-cell treatments to address the persistent knee issues. The Canadian described this period as the “toughest challenge” he had ever faced professionally.

Denis Shapovalov experienced numerous difficult matches upon his return, with pain often recurring mid-match. There were moments when victories seemed within reach before physical limitations intervened.

The support of his team and close family proved crucial during the rehabilitation process. They provided reassurance during doubtful periods and maintained belief in his eventual return to form.

    Championship Success Marks Comeback Year

Denis Shapovalov has captured two ATP titles in 2025, marking his most successful season in recent years. His victory at the ATP 500 Dallas Open represents the biggest title of his career to date.

The Canadian defeated top-10 players Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Casper Ruud en route to the Dallas championship. This achievement made him the fourth player since 2009 to defeat three top-10 opponents in an ATP 250 or 500 event.

Denis Shapovalov followed up with another title at the Los Cabos Open in July. He defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic in the final without dropping a set throughout the entire tournament.

These victories helped propel him back into the world’s top 30 rankings after an extended period outside the elite. His ranking improvement of 22 places in February reflected his renewed consistency.

    Personal Life and Support System

Denis Shapovalov became engaged to Swedish tennis player Mirjam Björklund in 2023. The couple recently welcomed a new puppy into their family, sharing the joyful news on social media.

Björklund provides invaluable support both on and off the court for the Canadian’s career. She offers tactical insights and emotional support during tournaments when present in his player box.

Denis Shapovalov appreciates her tennis intelligence and trusts her observations about his game. Their mutual understanding of professional tennis pressures strengthens their relationship.

The Swedish player has achieved a career-high WTA ranking of 123 whilst supporting her fiancé’s career. Her own professional experience provides valuable perspective during difficult periods.

Canadian Tennis Legacy and Future Goals

Denis Shapovalov ranks as the third-highest Canadian male player in ATP history. Only Milos Raonic (world number 3) and Félix Auger-Aliassime (world number 6) have achieved superior rankings.

His junior career included victories at the 2015 US Open doubles and 2016 Wimbledon singles championships. Denis Shapovalov reached a career-high junior ranking of world number 2.

The 2021 Wimbledon semi-final remains his best Grand Slam performance to date. He defeated Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut before losing to Novak Djokovic in the final four.

Denis Shapovalov aims to surpass his previous Grand Slam achievements with his renewed physical condition. The US Open third round provides an excellent platform to test his current form against elite opposition.

    Mental Maturity and Professional Growth

Denis Shapovalov emphasises the difference between his current confidence and earlier career periods. He describes his previous confidence as “high but fragile” compared to his present mental state.

His ability to bounce back from difficult weeks or unlucky draws demonstrates improved resilience. Denis Shapovalov credits this mental evolution for his recent title victories and consistent performances.

The Canadian’s three titles within 12 months reflect his enhanced psychological approach. He maintains belief in his abilities even during challenging stretches of form.

Denis Shapovalov expresses gratitude for the difficult periods that ultimately strengthened his character. The knee injury experience provided valuable perspective about perseverance and patience.
