Ryan Finnigan has completed a season-long loan move from Blackpool to Walsall, marking another pivotal step in the promising midfielder’s career. The 21-year-old seeks regular first-team football after a string of loan spells and is determined to make his mark in League Two this season.

Early Promise and the Southampton Academy

Ryan Finnigan began his footballing journey at Southampton’s esteemed academy, joining in 2012 as a schoolboy. After years of progression, he signed professional terms with the Premier League side in December 2020. He made his senior debut as a substitute in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town in January 2021, showing composure and technical ability under pressure.

While primarily a central midfielder, Finnigan has played numerous roles throughout the middle of the park, becoming valued across youth and development teams.

    Breakthrough Opportunities and Loan Spells

Despite being highly rated at Southampton, Ryan Finnigan struggled to break into the Saints’ senior Premier League squad. He enjoyed a productive loan at Crewe Alexandra in League Two, making 16 appearances and scoring his first professional goal against Hartlepool United.

A subsequent loan to League One’s Shrewsbury Town was cut short by a serious ankle injury. That setback paused his development, but Finnigan rebounded to join Blackpool on a permanent deal in January 2024.

    Permanent Switch to Blackpool

Blackpool offered Ryan Finnigan the platform for a fresh start, signing him on a deal through June 2026. He scored on his debut in a 4-0 EFL Cup win over Burton Albion and featured regularly, tallying three goals in 18 appearances across all competitions during the 2024-25 season.

However, strong competition for starting places at Bloomfield Road limited Finnigan’s minutes, and the club’s summer recruitment further increased midfield competition. This context prompted Walsall’s pursuit of the young English midfielder.

    Why Walsall Wanted Finnigan

Walsall head coach Mat Sadler contacted Blackpool early to express admiration for Ryan Finnigan. Sadler emphasised Finnigan’s box-to-box qualities, his composure on the ball, and desire to transition play from defence to attack. “Ryan is a box-to-box midfielder, good on the ball and wants to progress the ball from the middle to the front thirds,” Sadler remarked.

Sadler noted Finnigan’s versatility across every midfield role. He expressed confidence that the player’s ambition and willingness to “put a foot in, cover ground, and be a physical threat” will help him force his way into a competitive Walsall squad.

    Playing Style and Strengths

Statistically, Ryan Finnigan shows promise. Compared to League One midfield peers, his aerial duels won (55%), goals (87th percentile), and defensive contributions (49%) stand out. His 2024-25 numbers—three goals, several assists, and strong passing metrics—point to real attacking upside.

Finnigan describes himself as a midfielder who “gets on the ball, dominates games, and isn’t afraid to compete physically.” He seeks to enjoy his football and play with a smile, qualities welcomed by fans and coaches alike.

    Career Statistics at a Glance

To date, Ryan Finnigan has made over 40 senior career appearances, with stints at Southampton, Crewe, Shrewsbury, and Blackpool. His mix of goals, assists, and versatility underline potential for a defining campaign with Walsall.

He became Walsall’s 12th summer signing and fourth loan arrival, reinforcing a midfield overhaul aimed at pushing for League Two play-off contention.

    Overcoming Adversity for Progress

Injuries have interrupted Ryan Finnigan’s young career, particularly a severe ankle problem at Shrewsbury. Yet, his resilience—returning to play regularly with Blackpool before seeking more minutes at Walsall—marks him as mentally strong and adaptable.

Coach Sadler highlights that Finnigan, after missing regular starts at Blackpool, “hasn’t had the game time he wants,” but brings a determined approach to win a spot in the Walsall starting XI.

    Ambitions for the Season Ahead

For Ryan Finnigan, the primary goal is to secure a regular first-team place, contribute goals and assists, and help Walsall challenge at the top end of League Two. He believes his skill set and positive mentality position him well to meet these objectives.

He sees the move as a chance for a fresh chapter and a potential springboard toward progressing up the English football pyramid, whether with Blackpool, Walsall, or beyond.

Supporter Expectations and the Bigger Picture

Walsall fans are eager to see if Finnigan lives up to the hype that followed him from Southampton and Blackpool. His box-to-box style, technical ability, and energy could add drive to the Saddlers’ engine room.

A successful season could see Ryan Finnigan emerge as one of League Two’s standout midfielders, potentially reigniting ambitions for international youth recognition and long-term advancement.
