Ryan Gravenberch’s journey from a promising Dutch talent to one of Liverpool’s standout performers has captured the attention of football fans across the UK. In a season marked by tactical innovation and silverware, Gravenberch’s transformation under Arne Slot has been nothing short of remarkable. As the 2024-25 Premier League Young Player of the Season, he has become a symbol of Liverpool’s new direction and ambition.

From Amsterdam to Anfield: A Rapid Rise

Born in Amsterdam in June 2002, Gravenberch made his professional debut for Ajax at just 16. His early promise saw him lift three Eredivisie titles before a move to Bayern Munich in 2022. Although his time in Germany was brief, Liverpool recognised his potential and secured his signature in the summer of 2023 for £34.2 million. The move proved timely, as Liverpool sought to rejuvenate their midfield with youthful energy and technical skill.

Slot’s Masterstroke: The New Number Six

When Arne Slot arrived at Anfield, Liverpool faced a pressing dilemma. The departure of key midfielders had left a void in the holding role. Many supporters worried about the lack of a specialist defensive midfielder. Slot, however, saw something different in Gravenberch. In pre-season, he experimented with the Dutchman as a deep-lying playmaker, a decision that would define Liverpool’s campaign.

Gravenberch embraced the challenge. He started all 34 matches in Liverpool’s title-winning run, anchoring the midfield with poise and intelligence. His ability to break up play, read the game, and launch attacks made him indispensable. Slot praised his unique ability to create overloads by dribbling from deep, a rare trait among holding midfielders. This tactical shift not only improved Liverpool’s balance but also freed up Alexis Mac Allister to play further forward, adding another dimension to the team’s attack.

    Statistical Standout: Numbers That Matter

Gravenberch’s impact is reflected in the numbers. He led all Premier League midfielders with 59 interceptions and topped Liverpool’s squad for times possession was won, with 189 recoveries. He also ranked second at the club for passes and was among the top three for tackles, duels, and minutes played. Despite his defensive duties, Gravenberch contributed four assists, showcasing his versatility and influence in both halves of the pitch.

His progressive carries—114 of over 10 metres—ranked him joint seventh among Premier League midfielders, and first among those in deeper roles. These statistics underline his ability to drive Liverpool forward and maintain offensive momentum, a crucial factor in the club’s relentless pressing and counter-attacking style.

    Recognition and Silverware

The 2024-25 season will be remembered as a breakthrough year for Gravenberch. His performances earned him the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, making him only the second Liverpool player to win the accolade since its inception. He was also nominated for the EA SPORTS Player of the Season, a testament to his consistency and influence in a title-winning side.

Gravenberch’s medal collection continues to grow. In addition to his Premier League triumph, he has now won league titles in the Netherlands, Germany, and England by the age of 23. His recall to the Netherlands national team further highlights his rising stature in European football.

Off the Pitch: Calm, Reserved, and Ambitious

Despite his rapid ascent, Gravenberch remains grounded. He describes himself as calm and reserved, preferring to let his football do the talking. This season has been special for personal reasons as well, with Gravenberch and his partner expecting their first child. He credits his success to hard work, adaptability, and the support of his teammates and coaching staff.

    Transfer Rumours: Real Madrid Interest

Gravenberch’s stellar form has not gone unnoticed. Reports from Spain have linked him with a future move to Real Madrid, especially following the retirement of Toni Kroos. Liverpool, however, have made it clear that he is not for sale, valuing him at up to €90 million. His agent has acknowledged interest from major European clubs but insists Gravenberch is focused on his Liverpool career, with a contract running until 2028.

The Road Ahead: More to Come

As Liverpool look to build on their recent success, Gravenberch’s role will only grow in importance. Head coach Arne Slot has challenged him to maintain his high standards and consistency, especially with the demands of playing every three days in a packed fixture schedule. The Dutchman’s blend of defensive diligence, technical ability, and attacking drive make him a perfect fit for Liverpool’s evolving style.

Gravenberch himself is hungry for more. The celebrations following Liverpool’s last title win have only strengthened his desire for further silverware. As he told reporters, “Winning the Premier League is one of the biggest prizes you can win. The passion on the fans’ faces gave me goosebumps. That image will never leave me”.

    Conclusion: Liverpool’s Midfield Future

Ryan Gravenberch has emerged as a key figure in Liverpool’s new era. His transformation under Arne Slot has brought balance, energy, and creativity to the midfield. With his best years still ahead, Gravenberch looks set to remain at the heart of Liverpool’s ambitions, inspiring both teammates and fans as the club targets more glory at home and in Europe.
